Starting point numbers for DM542S/DM542T drivers

I am just getting started in this and figuring out what all is in stepconf. I have 3 DM542T 1 DM542S driver. I guess they fill the kit with what they have and the vendor claims the drivers are just different manufacturers. I didn't find them in the wiki or with a forum search.

I am looking for starting points for the Step Time, Step Space, Direction Hold and Direction Setup numbers in stepconf.

I have DM542A drivers from Longs motors. I think they are pretty good and I have pushed them to very short step timings (around 500) on a Mesa 7i76e. I've never used a par port. But as Tommys says, start conservatively. There are many other things that limit performance than step timings...

I was hoping to get a bit closer to start. I don't really need to go all that fast. This is for a router (Gatton CNC) with 2 rotations/inch lead screws. If I can spin the motors at 250 rpm I will be close to maxing out the rest of the machine. The only timing specs that come with the drivers are max pulse input frequency of 200kHz and min pulse width of 2.5 microseconds.

Did you ever work out any nice numbers?

Note that this isn't about "tuning". The step pulses are either long enough, or they are too short.

Also note that minimum pulse widths for step motor drives are often just on the edge of
not working, so unless you are pushing drives to their maximum possible speed
doubling the minimum timings should work in almost any situation.

If you have no information on the drives, a good starting point is:

steplen = 5000
stepspace = 5000
dirsetup = 20000
dirhold = 20000

Unless these numbers limit your maximum speed, there is no reason to reduce them
That is, these settings will allow up to 100 KHz step pulse rates which at a microstep
ratio of 16/1 would get you to almost 1800 RPM, way beyond where most stepmotors
/ drives have useful torque.

I think I left the numbers at what people suggested. I only run up to about 90 ipm so they work for me.
