I have looked but have not found a good answer. Can the Huanyang VFD be controlled thru the input and output pins of a standard BOB?
I see everyone using a USB dongle or a 232 to 485 converter but can it be done with the bob?

Maybe, it depends on the breakout board. The el cheapo 5 axis Mach 3 boards with a relay and an analog out work adiquitly.

I am pretty sure i saw in one of those the possibility of setting the input for 5V or 10V, so it should be possible to control it from any BOB.

I was wandering about the digital out and digital in in the configuration to enable 2 way communication. is that possible to set it up as the rs485 comm to the VFD

First, not all Huayang VFD models even have the serial control option. Second, I don't think it would be practical to try to bit bang the serial connection with a parallel port. Much simpler to use a regular serial port or usb dongel. Third, if you use regular run and analog commands the control is in real-time vs user-space like all of the serial options.

Thanks for the info Todd. that was kind of what I was thinking but was not sure.. It looks like I will go the 232 to 485 route.
