When the spindle is not suppose to be running, you need to remove the run signal. Close it when you get an M3,

Without the run signal, it should not spin.

motion.spindle-forward ===> output (run contact on VFD)

Hal and ini files ?
And do double check the wiring, that does not seem right, it should work properly as per the above wiring explanation.

The machine is at the workshop so will have to check tomorrow. thanks

I did think that but I'm sure I should be able to have the spindle running slowly. at the moment it seems to be a minimum of 1000rpm

Are the two commons attached?

You may need to supply an isolated 10 or 12V since it looks like the spindle control
cannot supply the ~5 mA that the 7I76 analog out circuitry needs.

Note the _isolated_ make sure the supply is isolated (no PC supplies etc)

I'm confused now because I thought the isolated spindle output on the 7i76 was to be able to interface with non isolated drives.

Would this be suitable? uk.rs-online.com/web/p/isolated-dc-dc-converters/1874585/

It can interface with non-isolated drives but the drive must supply about
5mA for the digital potentiometer circuitry.
That 12V DC-DC converter should work (with possible scale changes in the ini file to adjust for the 12V full scale output)
