IIRC you connect the sensor to A and index and put the encoder component into counter mode

sorry, I think I miscommunicated.
I have an optical encoder mounted already which gives 1 pulse per rev. ( presume I connect that to the index input ? )
Ideally, I wan to get this ( single pulse optical encoder ) working prior to the proper quadrature encoder arriving and being mounted..... Lots of additional timing pulleys and metal bashing to do to get the quadrature encoder to work, and I would prefer the logic and hal to be somewhat correct first.
I have done a search for encoder spindle pulse ... cant see anything about single index pulse encoders though.
Ideas ?

as I said you connect the ouput to A and index and put the encoder component into counter mode.
