DMM Servo spindle deceleration

hey guys,

I'm trying to set up a DMM 1kw servo in step/dir mode on a 7i76e to use as a spindle. The acceleration ramp works fine and gets me what I need, but when I command an M5, the motor comes to a screeching halt regardless of what speed it's running at. Is there a way to ramp down the spindle the same way it ramps up? I was thinking maybe connecting the drive to the encoder might help resolve this? It's currently just running under step/direction connection #4, nothing connected to the encoder pins.
