My time is better spent checking that the electronics work via parallel port...
Can anyone link me a how to on getting the right real-time drivers...
My fresh install of 2.8.4 won't respond to a loadrt...
which leads me to the conclusion that i need to switch to the real-time kernal.
As for the ports I ran "lspci -v"
and got an array of port addresses and can't tell which to use...
Also it seems to indicate that it is a 9912 moschip...

2.8.4 works with parallel ports, it has a real time kernel, the RT Preempt version, so no need to install anything IF the PC has good base period latency.
If the latency is bad, then you can install the RTAI version of the kernel and LinuxCNC, there is a section and how to on the downloads page.
For now, use StepConf wizard to make a configuration, for parallel port address leave 0 and add 1 for the second port, see if that works.
If not, the result of LSPCI you attached has IO ports for both parallel ports, use the first one for each and do another test.

Will give you a list of your parallel ports and the hardware ports in use.
What is emat by "My fresh install of 2.8.4 won't respond to a loadrt." what is the actual command line and what error do you get ?

I was going to follow the guide on: linuxcnc.org/docs/2.6/html/hal/parallel_port.html
so when i go to add the first line i get this...
It seems as though "loadrt" is not included in the standard release...

Wow The drive arrived and it worked... So you were right the drives were the problem.
Goes to show you how much you need to be careful, I should have just replaced the whole thing...
Sorry to be such a pain, but you guys have demonstrated a range of things i was unclear of... Most helpful...
I will get a new one a few days time...

This is how you should run loadrt if you need to run outside the context of a linuxcnc config:
xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx:~$ halrun
halcmd: loadrt hal_parport
Note: Using POSIX non-realtime
config string '0x0278'
No parport registered at 0x278. This is not always an error. Continuing.
halcmd:

OK, Thanks for that... I can see that the parallel port setup was just needing the address...
However it seems that my problem is still relevant... And could help others in the future...
You see the new g540 arrived and i tested them with the parallel port setup... They were fully functioning.
But when i switch back to my ethernet setup I still can't latch the software e-stop with g540's built in E-stop line....
So what i have done is made the pin13 the permanent E-stop pin...
pin 15 was the problem... It still needs to be connected to the E-stop for the drive enable signal
but you should not connect it via software...
To do this i have two separate lines coming from the E-stop going to each of the pins...
I think that is me signing out... I am so sorry it boiled down to a such a small issue.
But you have all been huge...
