ATC spindle with iso30/bt30 or hsk63f was created by Marcodi
Hi,
I am planning an order for an atc spindle. I have my eyes on an air-cooled 12kw, 9.2 Nm torque, 24000 rpm spindle.
It can be delivered with all 3 toolholder types. I was wondering what I would choose. The iso30 and bt30 holders are the same price. The hsk63f is 1000 USD more expensive.
I was inclined to go for the bt30 holder type with balanced holders at 30.000 rpm.
Machine i own is a gantry type router for wood and aluminium. Machine weight 3500kg. Gantry 1200kg. 1000w hybrid leadshine servo all axis. 30mm hiwin guides.
Any thoughts or suggestions.?

Is that correct ?
I would venture a guess that a 12KW ATC spindle that can do 24000RPM would cost same as a small apartment !

And on that topic, how much is that beast?
And yes most router spindles do 24000RPM, up to 3KW for normally priced ones, from then on the price goes higher exponentially.
I also have access to some that do 60000RPM on some fancy 5 axis machines for dental work.

I never said it was absurd, just it is expensive.I don't really get why this would be so absurd. Most router spindles do 24000 rpm or am I confusing something?

It's not that much (in my opinion as making my living with it) the price with encoder and vfd is 2500 USD.

Remains the question, what would be the opinion on toolholder choice?

That is a very nice price. The lowest i have seen to date for an ATC spindle was 5200$ for a 4.5KW SK30 from a shady Chinese seller.
Back on topic, the tool holders i used were SK40 and i quite liked them.
Thank you for the info, was quite a surprise.

Hi. I don't have any info on this but I recall speaking to a very experienced engineer who manufactures high end industrial turbine and compressor impellers about the tool holders.
Apparently...for high speed spindles hsk holders are the way to go. They are hollow and thus the centrifugal expansion at speed matches the spindle expansion and chances of fretting is less.
I guess you also have to consider the tool holder cost. Hsk holders are bound to be more expensive too

Because of the big cost difference I was contemplating to go for the bt40 head.
As far as I researched the bt40 actuall gets in contact with the spindle unlike the iso30 that apparently works with a spring. Thus bt40 having higher cutting strength as it makes mechanical contact. Correct me if I am wrong. That is why I opened this topic.
Hsk63f seems indeed the top choice but will set me back 1500 EUR over my budget as the toolholder cost is also higher and I need 16 holders.
So I was wondering if bt30 would than be the second choice and iso30 last choice.
Who agrees with this?

Iso and bt have the same contact area. HSK is the way to go in my opinion.
Nice price for a spindle. If it is not a secret, where are you getting it from?
