Building a new linux server. Plan on just using the Live CD to install linux and emc2. This will be a desktop to serve as a general purpose machine in the second bedroom, as well as a server to connect the machines with the Windows machine which has the CAD-CAM software installed.

Anyone know is the LiveCD includes the "samba" package (which is the main packet forwarding doodad, as I understand it) ?

Thanks

Seems like you have to add it to a normal Ubuntu install...

Update manager shows about 250 packages which need updating after initial installation. Show I let it up date all of these?

Hi

See this topic

www.linuxcnc.org/index.php/english/compo...mit=6&start=12#16323

You can update some things without problems, but unless something does not work, you are just version number chasing.

I would disable all updates except for emc, or disable updates altogether.

I let all my EMC machines update everything except the OS and I turn that prompt off.

I'm going to try John's method.

As this is a brand new machine, it's got nothing loaded which can't be easily replaced.

More results later.

Seems like things are always more complicated than they should be.

Is there an easy way to block Update Manager from updating the OS?

How can I recognize which files I DO NOT want to update?

How do I start samba?

How do I convince samba to start automatically each time I power up the computer?

Thanks

Doesn't the possibility exist that a server may generate some wildly fluctuating latencies? I take it you don't want a dedicated EMC2 machine then.

The server will be a desktop, located in a bedroom, to function as a second general purpose computer for the household, as well as a server. It WILL allow me to crank up EMC2 in either axis or sherline, and watch the progress of the gcode, but with no machine attached.

My garage is unheated, unless I'm running the Bridgeport. Nice to be able to run emc2 from a warmer (or cooler) location.

But you are probably right.

Tom, did you visit the link in my previous message about the OS updating?

Once configured by usually right clicking on a directory and tell it to share it samba will be there from then on.
