My 2cents

I would run separate boxes

For a server just about any box will do since
serving files takes Very little horsepower.

Is there an easy way to block Update Manager from updating the OS?

How can I recognize which files I DO NOT want to update?

How do I start samba?

How do I convince samba to start automatically each time I power up the computer?

Tom, did you visit the link in my previous message about the OS updating?

Once configured by usually right clicking on a directory and tell it to share it samba will be there from then on.

About five minutes after I posted this, I figured out the OS updating question. Took it from about 250 files to update to around 12. Much more manageable.

Not got the right click going yet. Ub tells me that I can't do it, as I'm not the file owner. Working on that now....

Thanks

Tom

This box is going to be used primarily as a server. It's main job is to hold the CAD-CAM files, which are generated on a windows machine, and then deliver them to the mill, which is, of course, a Linux machine.

This is mostly to let me quit running back and forth with a thumb drive.

It will occasionally be used for word processing, internet access, etc.

I should have been more specific and said right click on a folder in/below your home folder like emc2 and tell it to share it.
