linuxcnc 2.5 upgrade on 8.04 hardy offline

Somewhere in the 2.3 to 2.5 time frame the step timing numbers changed from base thread periods to nS
This may account for the Gecko timing difficulties

UPDATE: followed the instructions to upgrade 2.4 to 2.5. Ran into a problem.

It's telling me that 2.5 has some Ubuntu dependencies that are not installed -- libtk-img, python, stuff like that -- probably because I skipped the Ubuntu upgrades to save time !!!!

Sooooo .... I'm going to do those Ubuntu upgrades using the "old-releases" sources, and then give 2.5 another go.

UPDATE: I successfully upgraded 8.04 to 2.5.4. Here's the important points in case someone else with the same problem stumbles upon this thread:

-- the main Hardy repositories are dead, but the "old-releases" repositories still work as explained by Eric66.

-- it's possible to upgrade 8.04/2.3 to 2.4 without upgrading Hardy's Ubuntu files, but 2.5 won't install without first doing the Hardy Ubuntu upgrades.

-- once you get the Ubuntu upgrade sorted out, 2.5 installs normally.
