replacement of GEDIT with Mousepad was created by RotarySMP
I have installed 2.7.0, from the live dis image, and it looks like GEDIT was replaced with MOUSEPAD.
In the machine INI, in the [DISPLAY] section I added
EDITOR = mousepad
but the edit button in LINUXCNC still doesn't work.
Any advise please?

Thanks Chris,
I don't have the lathe controller connected to a net work, at present. Shouldn't mousepad work just the same? If GEDIT is necessary, I'll drap the conrtoller, monitor and keyboard up the office and hang it on a LAN cable.

It should allow you to edit G-code just the same, yes. But it doesn't do syntax-highlighting, or let you open more than one file at a time, and is hideous otherwise in too many ways to enumerate.
I strongly recommend installing gedit.

Did you comment out or delete the
or any other EDITOR = line?
and then add
Works fine here, also double check your spelling and Caps
should work
butwill not.

Thanks Rick and Andy
I had replaced "gedit" with "mousepad". I checked, and hadn't used a capital M.
I'll load the current 2.7.4 (as I have a 2.7.0 image at present. I'll add gedit at the same time.

I wouldn't bother reinstalling, just update LinuxCNC and install gedit from the Synaptic package manager.

I hung this computor on a Lan cable, and updated to 2.7.4. Thanks, for the suggestion, as that went really easy.
I also had a problem that could access SUDO through programs like the update manager, but it wouldn#t accept my password for SUDO through the terminal. Solved that by booting to recovery root and adding this profile to SUDO.
I still can't install Gedit though. I tried both apt-get...
boley@Boley-4LV:~$ sudo apt-get install gedit
Reading package lists... Done
Building dependency tree
Reading state information... Done
E: Unable to locate package gedit
and aptitude...
boley@Boley-4LV:~$ sudo aptitude install gedit
Couldn't find any package whose name or description matched "gedit"

To install gedit in a terminal do:
Hmm, that may only work on Ubuntu based distros like LinuxMint...
Or do like Andy said and open the Synaptic Package Manager and type gedit in the search box.
Edit: fix typo in command
JT
sudo apt-get install -y gedit/trusty gedit-common/trusty gedit-plugins/trusty
