Linuxcnc 2.7 is "bricking" my computer, any way to rollback update to 2.6?

I recently thought I try updating my set up.
I updated from ubuntu ( 12.04) on the internet (not from a usb stick) all went nominal.
commented out
#loadrt probe_parport
-and-
#addf hm2_5i25.0.pet_watchdog servo-thread
from my Hal file per the update instructions - linuxcnc.org/docs/2.7/html/getting-start..._configuration_files
It starts up and the banner with the version shows on desktop but hangs there indefinitely.
I kill the process off , go to start again and it says linuxcnc is already running.
I really don't know if this version is too incompatible with my machine or not.
I've run 2.6 for about 4 years flawlessly.
BTW may mill is a supermax taht had an old anilam controllor in it. i reused all the glass slides and servo drives. the computer is amd processor on a gigabyte MB GA-MA78GM with radeon onboard video. It has been running fine for years.
maybe I need to configure something more, I don't know...
any help is appreciated

I would try a couple things to determine what's going on before going back to 2.6
1. Can you start LinuxCNC from the command line so you can capture any error messages
2. if this is s RTAI based distribution (likely) can you post the kernel log here:
to do this you clear the log , run linuxcnc and then look at any pertinent error messages in the log
( do this in a terminal window )
sudo dmesg -c (clears the log)
linuxcnc (run linuxcnc)
dmesg > log.txt (copy the kernel log to a file)
and then post log.txt here
Note that when LinuxCNC hangs and does not fully exit for any reason you need to execute
halrun -U
to remove any hung bits of LinuxCNC
Many times this does not work and you will need to reboot the computer to try again

The whole system locks up? you mean you no longer have any access to the machine?
I thought only the linuxcnc script hung because you said this:
"I kill the process off , go to start again and it says linuxcnc is already running."
LinuxCNC on Ubuntu 12.04 is not a normal distribution so there could possibly be some incompatibilities with 2.7
If you launch LinuxCNC from the command line you should get some messages even if it hangs

if all i do is click my shortcut to start linuxcnc it tries to start and the banner just sits there. i kill linuxcnc from system monitor. the computer becomes minimal;ly responsive.
i try to start linuxcnc again but it says the instance is still running.
now
if i try to do the operations from terminal as you request; im not going to kill off linuxcnc , since i figured we want the info from the log. That is when terminal locks up, linuxcnc is still frozen as a banner and i have no access to system monitor or anything.... then i literally haver to shut down computer with the on/off buttonj.
