Thanks massively for everyone's help :) I managed to get everything working ok to a fundamental level now. Software is great. Just now i need to add things like home switches, emergency stop button, spindle speed control etc.
First part (after a few attempts at getting good workholding)

Really appreciate the pointers guys! If i ever get to a point where I am knowledgeable to give advice to people, I hope I can return the favor to someone else on these forums :)

Yea i will have to build an enclosure next. At the moment i am making each cut with holding a vacuum cleaner next to the tool to catch all the dust!!! hah

Do you have any recommendations on what is best for a touch off plate? I will take your advice and try to use one of those next.

Really pleased i started making some aluminium parts. All works but not great accuracy since i still need to install the touch plate .. and get a good vise which can hold parts actually flat...

Still watching videos to try and get my head around the best way to touch off and do tool changes in LinuxCNC. It's annoying because it's likely something really simple for people who already CNC, but for me looking at it for the first time, it seems a little confusing what the process is. Some people put the plate on the work, some to the side etc.
Ahh well that's some fun for this weekend anyway :P

If you get some collet holders and keep tools setup it would be better to touch off the table and set g54z for the table to top of work.

But it is all user preference here. Which ever you are comfortable with.
