Installing LAN on new Linux CNC install

Hey Everyone,

I am having trouble getting my Ethernet ports working on my gigabyte GA-H87N Mother Board.

I have succesfully installed Linux from the most current Linux CNC download, but was unable to install my ethernet ports.

The board has Dual Ethernet Ports, and the Idea was to use one as a wired network connection and one as the connection for my 7i76e

If anyone can give some advise on where to go to get this working it would be greatly appreciated as I have zero linux experience.

Thanks!

Pretty sure Wheezy will not work with the Intel MACs on the GA-H87N
Did you try Stretch?

Yes:

Debian versions:

Wheezy = 7 (obsolete) released 2013
Jessie = 8 (obsolete) released 2015
Stretch = 9 (current) released 2017
Buster = 10 (probable mid year release)

MAC is Media Access Controller = Ethernet chip basically

Ok, I see. I apologise for my ignorance in regards to Linux. So with that being said the Linux CNC download from the sight uses wheezy, which I installed. Is there a way to simply upgarde or do I just install a whole new version fresh?

Before you go ahead and re install can you try
sudo lspci

And copy the output......I'll check if stretch supports your ethernet chips.

Mutt,

This is what I got back:

00:00.0 Host bridge: Intel Corporation Haswell DRAM Controller (rev 06)
00:02.0 VGA compatible controller: Intel Corporation Device 041e (rev 06)
00:03.0 Audio device: Intel Corporation Haswell HD Audio Controller (rev 06)
00:14.0 USB controller: Intel Corporation Lynx Point USB xHCI Host Controller (rev 05)

00:1f.3 SMBus: Intel Corporation Lynx Point SMBus Controller (rev 05)
02:00.0 Ethernet controller: Atheros Communications Inc. AR8161 Gigabit Ethernet (rev 10)

After doing some googling on stretch and linux cnc, it seems like the official release hasnt been pushed out yet reading the Gethub. I did find a live image here: linuxcnc.org/testing-stretch-rtpreempt/ Though im not exactly sure how to use whats on this page....

After reading through more on git hub that looks like the direction I will have to go one way or the other because of the ethernet conection on the 7i76e?

This is a lot to take in so I may be mis interpretting what i was reading there.

Sorry it should have been
sudo lspci -nn

I have a feeling that your ethernet controller may not be supported in stretch, if it isn't and it is the device i think it is I have posted a solution before.
