It has two ethernet cards, one is Intel, the other is Atheros. Hmmmm i used Atheros a lot back when wardriving was a thing.
Stretch should work with at least one of them, but there are no guaranties.
That seems to be quite new PC, did you check the magnificent tutorials on how to install Linuxcnc on Linux Mint? Linux mint will most probably work with both cards, but it is a bit of a "copy/paste" affair .
I am aware i am not helping much, but i have plenty of computers and i do install them very often, and since i use Linux Mint with Mate desktop i never have such issues. On older computers i use Debian stretch net install and add only what i need at that instance, but i did notice it is a bit on the "picky" side when it comes to ethernet.

Ok you should be ok with your Intel Ethernet controller and your Atheros Controller should be ok as well.
Download this image:
linuxcnc.org/testing-stretch-rtpreempt/l...uspace-amd64-r12.iso
And use the instructions as before to put this image on a USB stick.

Tommy,
The PC is actually about 5 years old. I haven't seen/heard of mint but I'll look into it. I didn't buy this PC with the intention of doing Linux, I originally planned to do mach.

You'll be right with that iso.
I checked with my stretch install and the drivers you need, e1000e for the Intel card and alx for the atheros card.
I ran modinfo on both drivers and the drivers were compiled to load for those particular cards.

Didn't realize a internet connection was necessary. I'll give that a try.
