New here and have a question.
I have followed the instruction on the first post in this thread and have successfully installed as described.

Is there any reason that I should not let the system perform updates?

Thanks

You can do:
sudo apt update
sudo apt dist-upgrade
as much as you like and it will update everything.
But will not allow new kernels and new Mint version that would render LinuxCNC non functional.

Wanted to try out the o so widely praised mint, so I dug out this thread.

wgetting the mentioned kernel failed, as "http.us.debian.org/" could not be found. I searched for a similar kernel here , downloaded ist and installed it.

I got this

So I guess, that kernel and source is no good. Which one then?

It works here:

And the source code and unstable packages need to be enabled in the software sources from the main menu>administartion
Edit:
I did manage to install and run the 5.6 kernel, but the latency was terrible.

worked now here too, maight have been a temprary name resolver problem.

However I still got some warning:
Code:
... dkms: running auto installation service for kernel 5.4.0-0.bpo.4-rt-amd64 ...done. /etc/kernel/postinst.d/initramfs-tools: update-initramfs: Generating /boot/initrd.img-5.4.0-0.bpo.4-rt-amd64 W: Possible missing firmware /lib/firmware/i915/tgl_dmc_ver2_04.bin for module i915 W: Possible missing firmware /lib/firmware/i915/skl_guc_33.0.0.bin for module i915 W: Possible missing firmware /lib/firmware/i915/bxt_guc_33.0.0.bin for module i915 W: Possible missing firmware /lib/firmware/i915/kbl_guc_33.0.0.bin for module i915 W: Possible missing firmware /lib/firmware/i915/glk_guc_33.0.0.bin for module i915 W: Possible missing firmware /lib/firmware/i915/kbl_guc_33.0.0.bin for module i915 W: Possible missing firmware /lib/firmware/i915/icl_guc_33.0.0.bin for module i915 /etc/kernel/postinst.d/zz-update-grub: ...

I guess these can be disregarded.

i915 was an Intel chipset with built in graphics in the 2000's so it has no more support in recent kernels. Good, as it had plenty of issues and needed to be blacklisted often for Linux to work.
It is safe to ignore those warnings.
