Installing from linuxcnc-2.8.0-buster.iso fails via USB

I am trying to install LinuxCNC from the linuxcnc-2.8.0-buster.iso image. I have tried writing the image to USB in both dd mode and FAT32 mode, both of which fail trying to "mount the CD-ROM".

I have tested debian-10.10.0-amd64-xfce-CD-1.iso and it installs successfully (or at least, gets past this step).

Use win32diskimager
not Rufus.

Thanks, that seems to have worked - however I still think there's a bug, especially as Debian Installer seems to have fixed this issue somewhere between 10.6 and 10.10.

If you give it a couple of hours to upload, I have just created a new 2.8.2 .ISO file, you should find it in here:
www.linuxcnc.org/iso
(look for the LinuxCNC-2.8.2-buster.iso file.)

Perhaps you can test that and see if the problem is fixed?
If not, I will dive deeper.

Unfortunately I can't reproduce this in a VM and the other machine that I was having this problem with has been packed up ready to go to the friend with the actual CNC.

If you've updated debian-installer / cdrom-detect that will most likely fix it.

Can I ask how the ISO is built? I couldn't see source code easily in the GitHub for it.

It uses the Debian "live-build" package and github.com/LinuxCNC/buster-live-build

Andy,

Can you give a quick tutorial on how to setup and run the live-build system?

If you download that repository, then you should just need to enter the directory and enter the commands in the readme
github.com/LinuxCNC/buster-live-build

If you want to customise it, then there is lots of documentation here:

At the very least, the debian repository URLs have changed. Haven't figured out what else is wrong yet.
