I downloaded the 2.9.8 latest version from the first link in the download page
Burned this iso to a pen drive under windows using Rufus latest version
Live preview works fine
Graphic install consistently fails at the point of installing GRUB
         - this happened on numerous older PC typically inter dual core with 4GB to 8GB of RAM and installing to an SSD
As a trial I installed 2.7.4 which I had on a pen drive without issue

It should be noted the 2.9.8 installed perfectly onto a much newer NUC PC using the same pen drive

I have installed 2.9.7 without any issues and will (Debian 13) and will look to update to 2.9.8 tomorrow when time allows

Please advise if any more info is required

In BIOS:
disable "secure boot"
enable CSM
try switching from Legacy to UEFI and vice versa.

As Tommy alludes to Grub errors are usually because you have secure boot enabled. Turn that off in the BIOS. Trixie is batter with secure boot but still better to disable it.

Secure boot is already turned off
I’ll take a look for CSM (assumed to be ‘compatibility support module’)

I didn’t spot it in the bios but equally wasn’t looking for it. Is it normally in the same area of the bios screen that legacy mode and secure boot reside ?

Thanks for the help so far

Thanks Rod
See my reply above to Tommy
Secure boot was already turned off
Machine for context is a Dell small form factor vintage 2014
Intel dual core 8gb ram
Selected as it gives really low max jitter numbers

Cheers. Paul

Tommy / Rod
Also worth remembering that I downloaded the previous latest version 2.9.7 which is also on Debian 13, burned the iso to a pen drive (all be it a different pen drive) using the same version of Rufus with all the same settings and that installed GRUB perfectly

It's a bit hazy in my memory what I did the ocational time I ran into that. I recall fixing it by choosing a different partitioning scheme during installation.

edit:
One day it was simply not working (grub install failed) and I finally started over with a different pen drive then it just worked. My pen drive was not quite up to snuff. Also confirm your downloaded iso contains no errors.

Thanks for the reply NWE
I’ve downloaded the iso 5 or 6 times and burned it to many different pen drives using various versions of Rufus and bletcher (I think that’s what called)
My friend also downloaded the same iso and burned it to a pen and installed onto a NUC without issue. He lent me the pen and that one failed at the same point
Also tried on numerous PC’s and numerous hard drives both ssd and mechanical hdd

I’ll give your theory on partitions a try tomorrow
Thanks

Paul

Not wanting to derail the original topic but my work around of installing 2.9.7 and then using the package manager to update to 2.9.8 failed

2.9.7 install from the iso ok other than a slight problem with a profile error on the desktop package. This did not affect anything
connected WiFi ok
apt package manager reported broken packages that needed fixing before linuxcnc would update to 2.9.8
fix broken packages didn’t work
so I’m some what stuck with my workaround
