OK I will try and duplicate this here on Monday
Could be a setsserial bug or 7I84 bug
(if the mean time, if you have free high speed encoder that will do 4x mode)

Ok, thanks for your support.
BTW when using the setsserial it ended with "Parameter successfully set" (I don't remember exact wording)

OK, I found the bug (its a 7I84 and 7I77 firmware bug):
The nvencoder_modeN parameters are not copied to the
volatile parameters (encodermodeN) at startup
it does work in the 7I76
I will fix the 7I84 and 7I77 firmware when I get a chance

What are the chances you've fixed this? I'm having the same issue.
I will have a free high speed encoder with my planned configuration, but its still annoying.
***EDIT***
I neglected to power cycle the board after reading this, thinking that I needn't bother. Turns out it must have been fixed in the firmware for my recent board. Disregard.

freeby.mesanet.com/sserial.tgz
Has updated firmware files that fix the nvencoder bug in the 7I84 (and 7I69)
