@10k
sorry for the delay,
I made some tests and the best I could find is to modify the layout.
I made one for a German keyboard.
To test please make a dir .matchbox in your home directory
Place the attached file in there and rename it to keyboard.xml
start your config and check if that would be better.

Could you please try to change the global font settings of your window manager?
Mine is set to SANS 10, if I set it to SANS 12, the fonts of the keyboard do get larger.

That didn't work. I set it for Sans 24, and all that got bigger was the headers on the windows. The letter size on matchbox-keyboard was unchanged.
I found this page about Matchbox Keyboard 1.5 fork, and that was a possibility
github.com/Xlab/matchbox-keyboard#matchbox-keyboard-15-fork
It allows setting of the font and the font size. It would require that I install the forked version of Marchbox Keyboard. But I was not sure that I could pass it any parameters, since it's built in to the gmoccapy code.
I did find a fix for the font size, though. I' running Debian Wheezy with XFCE. I went to
Application Menu - Settings - Appearance - Fonts
I checked the box next to DPI, and set it to 96. My Default Font is Sans 10.
I now have big letters on matchbox-keyboard!
