Theoretically you should be able to update to the latest and all "should" go well.
Don't forget that we don't provide any warranty.
If it fails, the way I did it in the past was to start afresh. I created a real rough config in pncconf and cut and paste in all the ini and hal settings into the file. This does not take very long and I got quite good at it in the early days!

If it fails then it would be best to report the failure so we could fix it.
OK I had another drive with a slightly older version but the same version of linuxcnc so I swapped it out in case it failed which it did.
I thought the warranty was about 10 years.Don't forget that we don't provide any warranty.

Was the apt error before the QtPlasmaC startup error?
If so it may pay to remove the linuxcnc-doc-en package and try sudo apt update, sudo apt dist-upgrade again before trying to run QtPlasmaC.

It shows as -y21.20, I think it should be y-21.20

Yes you are correct well spotted this is from the older version drive that I had.It looks like you have either LASER_OFFSET, CAMERA_OFFSET, or OFFSET_PROBING with an odd Y value.
It shows as -y21.20, I think it should be y-21.20
It has now booted and looks ok. Is this the latest?
If so I will update with the drive I use. Thanks.
