To Probe Basic from Gmoccapy was created by aikiaviator
Hi,

Firstly just want to state, Probe-Basic looks fantastic. Credit to you guys. Way over my head, but looking forwards to getting is working.

I am slowly going through the process of building up a CNC from a mill and started my journey on Gmoccapy. I have MESA 7i96S, 7i85S and a 7i73. It took me quite a while to get it configured to run and now making progress, however, I feel Probe-Basic is on the charge and wanted to shift across to this.

I will be using xyz at this point. Have installed Debian from the Linux install iso.

My question as a newby, is what is the best approach to move across and make sure that the config that I have been able to develop is retained at east in a way that can be realistically used to help configure Probe Basic. I am happy to blow away the environment and recommence, just don't want to loos e something that can help resolve a future problem from a current working solution. What is the best approach to this.

NOTE: I did try to just process through he install, but errors occurred in the get apt code so I stopped there. I think it may be to do with root security.

Use this for a starting point, then come back with more narrowed down questions and errors, then we can assist better.

Make backups of your working config folder, that's already important even if you were staying with gmoccapy.

Ok, I decided to complete a complete re-installation and work from clean. However getting the following:

abcabc@192-168-1-???:~$ apt --fix-broken install
E: Could not open lock file /var/lib/dpkg/lock-frontend - open (13: Permission denied)
E: Unable to acquire the dpkg frontend lock (/var/lib/dpkg/lock-frontend), are you root?
I definitely did not put a root password in. So ideas?

Ok, sorted ran sudo apt --fix-broken install

Ok, so tried a fresh install per the installation instructions. And got all the way to the AXIS/Probe Basic test. Errors out due to SSerial connection issues on the 7i73. Tried both MESACT and pnccomf config settings and all failed. Checked the latency and through the roof. So did a reinstall of the gmmocapy iso, and connected all good again. No errors. So will try to do the files workaround first. I have a feeling it is something to do with USB/ethernet connections to the 7i96S and/or maybe serial settings on the SSerial. So will try setup on the files and see how hat goes. Should have tried that first. FYI: Old Dell Inspiron 5000 series. 8GB ram, USB 3.1. BTW, if people know what this issue is with the Probe Basic stable install setup, I can always try a new install again. Go it down pat now... :-)

probably something simple being overlooked. just to verify, only one postgui hal file can be used in linuxcnc, so you need to make sure if you have one from the original config that you integrate it with the probe_basic_postgui.hal file, having multiple postgui hal files will result in the second in line not being loaded and or errors. just a sanity check to make sure you had done that!

Ok, so installed and getting a few errors after loading and conversion. I definitely feel this is very close to working. Missing some files I believe and maybe a little version control on some config content. The files are attached.
Any help appreciated.

and attached ini and hal files for reference...And although not in the spec, sserial.hal looks like it was necessary given config is on a 7i76S 7i85S 7i73 based system.
