Chris,
I quickly reinstalled from the CD, then in 2.8.0 started qtdefault_mm and Cam View worked perfectly,
then dist-upgrade done directly, then qtdefault_mm started and Cam View no longer works

but - interestingly - sim.axis.qtvcp with qtvcp_tab works now exactly as requested

It must be pulling out a custom handler file somehow - as none of the branches have 94 lines
nor self.pin_.set
nor self.pin_.set

for quick and easy customization of the QTvcp Cam View Dialog it would be good if somewhere be set
self.w.camview.diameter = 400
self.w.camview.diameter = 400

you can.
copy the cam_align_handler.py into your configuration folder (same name)
Modify that file as you like.
Qtvcp will use the local file in your config folder.

Chris, I would like to confirm again, as further up in the log, I installed from the Buster CD 2.8.0 on different motherboards several times and started qtdefault_mm with Cam View working perfectly, then always after dist-upgrade 2.8.1 qtdefault_mm where Cam View no longer works

Thanks for putting the effort into checking different versions.
On a system that fails, could you run linuxcnc from a terminal and post all the debug messages here?
