Debian wheezy is easiest. That's what the LiveCD is based on.

There are a few threads where people have a similar issues with:

"A configuration error is preventing LinuxCNC from starting."

for example:

forum.linuxcnc.org/forum/9-installing-li...inated-with-an-error

You might try google searching all the "A configuration error is preventing LinuxCNC from starting." threads
to see if any fixes work in your situation

On the other hand 10.04 is pretty ancient at this point so updating the OS and perhaps using a 4.x preempt-RT kernel
if your hardware requires it seem like a better path forward since it will allow the use of the latest master version.

did you change anything?
is it possible there is some other hardware failing?
(cant swap sounds like maybe hard drive?)

Actually, that is a very good question. I had missed that this was on a system that previously worked.

I have seen Linux behave very strangely when the disk drive (actually, SSD) was completely full.

1- anything ....
2- is because the title post ...
I have seen Linux behave very strangely when the disk drive (actually, SSD) was completely full.

I Have my little experience ... so disk is only at 19% ...

But the problem is : no lcnc specific error messages (only segfault/signal 11 and error 4 ... seems missing some file) in my trash basket there are nothings .... so no accidental file cancel ...
On other machine (twin machine) some week ago have a plug on 5i25 trouble ... solved wiyh clean the plug end re connect ... the same machine have the sserial error 7-13 on emergency stop sometime .... I work all these afternoon to try to find an hardware (no mesa) problem but nothings ...

Any how, I have install ubuntu 14.04 kernel 4.4.27rt (near ubuntu 10.04 without touch the old SO) at these point I need suggest how to install right lcnc ... last time in 14.04 i use linuxcnc precise base and it works ... but he has not worked well as I expected .... so I appreciate some guide ...

I'm boot ubuntu 14.04
uname -r
4.4.27rt

and now??

I think that Ubuntu 14.04 might have been a poor choice. I don't know if there is an RTAI kernel for that.
Do you have a good reason to choose Ununtu TRusty over, say, Debian Wheezy?

is because PCW say: actually lcnc work fine with 14.04 ...

than because I felt wheezy few months ago with bad results. Latency tests not good and plus I had difficulty instasllare non-standard libraries that I use ...

if any one know the right way to install over 14.04 a worker master (no only sim) please teach me.

If is impossible i can use 12.04, but it has some unresolved bug about display and ethernet driver.... (i think wheezy too)...

Giorgio

on the test pc I have install ubuntu 12.04 (kernel 3.4 - 32bit) and ubuntu 14.04 (kernel 4.1 32bit) ... after log in realtime kernel i try to install with these command:
sudo apt-key adv --keyserver hkp://keys.gnupg.net --recv-key 3cb9fd148f374fef

sudo add-apt-repository "deb http://linuxcnc.org/ precise base 2.7-rtai"

sudo apt-get install linuxcnc

on ubuntu 12.04 it work fine ... good latency... but orrible video support (bug mentioned above) .... on 14.04 PC has become unresponsive ... but everything else worked fine ... it is clear that the procedure for 14.04 version is incorrect ....

now i install on other pc. kernel 4.4.27rt 32bit ... ubuntu 14.04 work very fine ... I just have to install it LCNC tips appearance to limit failures ...
