The same for me...

As a side note ( mental ), i would love the 10.04 with updated stuff, same desktop and 2.8pre running on it.

Unity It is cumbersome over gnome to customize (or mate or xfce) .... but personally I'm used to work on unity and are now able to find it even functional ... (for LinuxCNC must create all the launcher by hand and save them as .desktop ... then depending on the job you can also turn into style icons gnome ubuntu 10.04 on the screen ..)

Now I try to envelope somethings in android like qtvcp (but I not use qtvcp only android and java) as remote gui for Lcnc... for my part Remote Qt Gui is just do (in these period I test my custom uspace comp for work with it... if test go ok i upload it to forum) .. surely android+java is more difficult then customize unity.....

SUrely the ubuntu direction actually is Qt ... so some legal noise about re-distribution there is ... but in the future we will Andoid our supreme commander ?? ;)

I am very sorry to bid farewell to Ubuntu 10.04  :( ... it was very nice to LCNC .... but now I'm in love with Ubuntu 04.14 (course for now I can not use it to LCNC) ... and I suspect I will like it also 16:04 ....

Regards
Giorgio

Actually Ubuntu 14.04 (and the derivative Mint 17) work fine with LinuxCNC,
Ubuntu 16.04 (and Mint 18) also work but have a few minor issues (mostly fixed in master)

Any of Mesas PCI/PCIE/Ethernet cards work fine with 2.7.x or master on 14.04

I would not bother with RTAI unless you are using a parallel port and software stepping
Its much easier to get modern hardware support via a Preempt-RT kernel
(though if you have older hardware I would stay with a 4.1.xx or lower kernel version)

I just installed a standard ubuntu 14.04 (same with Mint 17 and Mint 18)
then compiled/installed a Preempt-RT kernel and compiled LinuxCNC from source

Yes, same process. there are some minor issues with 16.04/Mint18

There's a setuid issue with 16.04 and Mint18 that causes trouble
with Ethernet cards ( something related to not getting root permissions to launch iptables )
I think this is only fixed in master

There's also a python numpy fix needed for 16.04/Mint18 but this has been added to 2.7.8
(but not added to master yet AFAIK)

Also for some reason Axis starts up minimized in Mint18. probably a window manager issue

has opensuse been consider, I think that the use of the suse build studio would make it easy and slick to build a linuxcnc Appliance.

I gave up on suse when they got bought by novel and novel sold the rights to microsoft for using linux modules in windows . I had to use novel for over 3 years ( job requirement ) and it was a total mess. Do not even get me started on windoze.
Then again suse was quite nice at that time. Pitty.
