John,
My initial concern was that 10.04 will no longer support new releases of LinuxCNC.

Last night i installed a version of 2.8pre on one of my desktops ( i have 2 running 10.04 ) as i get to run it with a 20000 base and 200000 servo thread. That means i can run 2 add on pci parallel cards in it at 50000 steps or counts per second without getting real time errors. Under linux mint i can not get it under 30000 and 500000 respectivly. On the other hand that version of 2.8pre does not have the JA ( joints-axis ). I would love to have that as i would run 10.04 on all of my computers, over 20 of them.

I'd bet that the next release of LinuxCNC when it comes will still work on 10.04. One problem is older hardware needs older OS's, some old hardware won't run on the latest OS's.

Maybe, but you might have to compile it yourself. I get the impression the developers would rather see it go away.
