Oh (insert bad words here) why did I look at this thread after andy mentioned SATA DOM........now I gotta get one

Actually make it, 2 it'd be great idea for the HTPC as well :laugh:

I have not had any real trouble with any of them. You might sometimes have to find a USB header on the board for their 5V supply.

I ended up ordering the J3355B mini itx recommended earlier in the thread. That along with a 4gb stick of ram was $95 shipped. Can't beat that. Going to try mounting it in the cabinet and see what happens. Worst case, I'll pick up a small enclosure and stick it behind the machine.

So is there a reason why this J3355B board would not boot from the wheezy bootable flash drive I've been using? I've tested it on several other machines and it seems to work fine. This one just fails and reboots back to the bios.

Hahaha yeah it is a bit of a pain, mine's actually rebuilding a kernel ATM but you need to go thru the bios and turn on CSM boot, by default it boots UEFI

Found the csm setting but still won't boot. I have it set to only boot from usb with the sata drive off. When I try to boot it goes straight back to the bios settings. I'm using a known good bootable flash drive that's worked on 4 other machine so I'm fairly confident it's not the drive.

It may be that the stock Wheezy kernel is too old to work with the J3355 CPU
You might try the Stretch test LinuxCNC/ kernel

Some PC boards will only boot from certain USB ports.

Maybe try them all?
