is that actually a magnetic encoder under the hood? wow
cant comment on the ec500 hardware, but you can check if your z is actually working by opening up halshow and turning on the index-enable signal and rotating the encoder. it should reset the encoder revs to 0 if index turns on, and then the index-enable signal will turn off. sometimes z doesnt show up well in halshow

Those are magnetic encoders. No optics at all. Are there any part numbers for the encoders?

They are a copy of the e6b2 omron encoders. There is no way to tell if it's magnetic or optical. It seems there are good copies which are dual boards with encoder wheels inside but there's no way of telling.

A magnet on the outside of the encoder. If the count then changes, you know it's a magnetic one.

Hi guys! I'm also trying to configure closed loop spindle on my RT1052 EC500. I mounted a Hall Sensor to my spindle and I see it under remora.input.31. I have a motor to spindle ratio of 1.8:1, I used Cakeslob config example with slight modifications. The spindle run but doesn't look closed loop since the rpm is not right but I can vary the speed with the override. I'm sure i'm missing something, do you need to configure the PRUencoder in the config.txt you upload to controller or everything is done in the .ini and .hal file? My mill is a Bridgeport with 2 gears (Low=50-1300 and High=1300-5000). For now I only want to configure closed loop on the high range and i'm gonna do the gearchange later. Any help will be really appreciated.

Murphy, your picture shows a magnetic encoder, not optical. The Omron e6b2 encoders have 4 different versions, with different voltages and polarity.
If it is a direct copy then your index pulse is on the orange or orange/orange with red stripe depending on version.

@Mudrat, I thought it was noise I was experiencing. But when I took the encoder apart I found it was a magnetic pickup instead of optical. It lost pulses above 200rpm and stopped counting. All omron e6b2 encoders have a dual board with disk inside. This was a single board. Pic below what it's suppose to look like inside(don't know if it genuine or a good copy)

What was the part number of the original encoder?
If it was an open collector output, was your pull up resistor to high a value?
Did you look at the pulse train with a scope?

The pulse turning it by hand seemed good. Anything over about 150rpm the pulse was distorted , it was an open collector npn 500ppr

@ vpomerleau, you may have to bypass the opticouplers on the board if it's over 2.5khz. rbobey1989 has a post in this thread about it.
If I ever manage to get mine going. I'll document what I did and what opticouplers to bypass etc
