Unfortunately you can't run EMC in a virtual machine because of the latency (the error you got).
I see you have a quad core processor and there have been some issues with them in the past as I recall. I did a search on the wiki and found this page that has some info on quad core processors.

EMC does not need a multi core processor to work. So if you have a single or double core machine to try it on you might have better luck.
What did you use to get the hardware print out?

I just tired 10.04 on a new AMD 6 core. Out of the box latency test reports 0 and does not run, EMC reports error. Set computer to 1 core in BIOS and now appears to run fine.
