Hi Andy, Do you have any further details on this component? I have an idea to make form relieved gear cutters and produce the backing off with this technique.

I have exactly the same idea, but have not, as yet, got round to it.

Now that the external-offsets branch has been merged it is technically much easier.

I am not sure what the ideal shape is, a sinusoid would be easiest for the machine to follow, but might not be the ideal relief shape.

I think a sinusoid is OK. You would have pre-gashed gear blanks and the tool needs to retract while in the tooth gap. The commercial form relieving machines are sinusoidal and based off cams/eccentrics. quick retract would be ideal though so that would be an asymetric cam profile if it can be achieved.

Is there some code I can try or is it in the latest LinuxCNC build. I'm keen to give it a shot.
Peter

I don't think I actually have anything to hand.
But it is pretty easy to write from scratch.

Which version of LinuxCNC are you currently on?

If you update to 2.8 then you can use:
linuxcnc.org/docs/devel/html/motion/external-offsets.html

In fact there is already a component to do what is required:
linuxcnc.org/docs/devel/html/man/man9/eoffset_per_angle.9.html

That will give a polygon with a certain number of sides. (It doesn't do the quick retract, but will at least serve as a proof of concept)

Also, when you get V 2.8 installed to get the external offsets, there are a number of sims using the new features you can study. The one turning a hexagon is quite cool to watch even on the screen!

Where do I find the link to V2.8? I can only see 2.7.14

Normally you can get 2,8 (which is the unstable development version) from buildbot.linuxcnc.org, but that appears to be down at the moment.
