www.gnipsel.com/linuxcnc/7i96/index.html
That is a tool made by JT for 7i96.

There is a working 7i96 config tool made by JT, gnipsel.com/linuxcnc/7i96/index.html Pncconf does not support the 7i96.
Some say that you can use the 7i76e in pncconf, but I found that to be a lot of work and very mediocre results.
Btw, the 7i76e card has some advantages over the 7i96 and is only a third more expensive.

if it has support from pncconf yet (or if this is planned)

a tool like that woudt be good for the 7i92 also
reding the pins in and provideng the user a full pinout on the given Bitfile flashed to the 7i92

Simple question: The 7i96 has an RS-485 interface, which according to the manual, "is intended for I/O expansion with Mesa SSERIAL devices". So can it be used to control a VFD or not?

That should be an RS422, not 485. So far i am not aware of anyone using it for that, they just use an USB to RS485 converter.

Not trying to be contrary, but the manual calls is "RS-422/RS-485 INTERFACE"
Well that's disappointing. Seems like it would be an important function to include in the FPGA.

Well, maybe PCW can do something about it, or at least tell us for sure if it is possible or not.
I just know that Mesa has two pairs of wires for that, RS485 use only a single set of wires.
Never liked RS485 much, and i utterly hated RS232 back in the days of modems and stuff.

With the correct bit file, it is possible to expose the Mesa UART and you can use this for serial communication.
See the hostmot2 docs linuxcnc.org/docs/devel/html/man/man9/hostmot2.9.html#UART
There are some examples on how to use this but to use it for your own purposes, you would need to write your own driver.
I also picked up on the RS485 with the 7i96.

I guess I will at least investigate a little further. I've done a lot of work with serial IO and once even implemented a 16550 type UART on a Spartan FPGA in VHDL, but I don't know if any of that will help now.

There is UART support in the firmware (PktUART) and minimal LinuxCNC driver support
There is another thread on where someone is using the PktUART to communicate with custom hardware:
