7i84-via-7i44-via-7i93 Mesa configuration wizard

I can see the 7i29 on this system - seems to make sense - but I can see the two 7i84's - but what I see on the screen doesn't match up with the number of inputs/outputs on the card in the Mesa configuration wizard

There are three "SOFTWARE PROCESS DATA MODES", but I didn't see a place where I would choose?

Perhaps I'm supposed to use a low-level configuration tool first?

I think I should see something like 32 inputs and 16 output?

I've attached what I'm seeing.

Pncconf can create the basic hal/ini files for
the 7I29 servo PWM/encoder setup (on P2)
but does not have any data for the sserial devices
connected to P1 via the 7I44

You will have to connect these manually in the hal file.

if you want a list of available 7I84 pins and parameters,
you can run:

halcmd show all | grep 7i84

When linuxcnc is running, the 7I84s are connected and have field power

$ halcmd show all | grep 7i84

The above line Is not returning anything. I can grep the 7i93 but not the 7i44 or 7i84 .. do I need some hostmot2-firmware-?? or run ssinstall out of sserial.zip?

Trying to figure out the setup workflow because I have to configure this manually - so after I add the 7i84 , will I not be able to run pncconf again to change anything?

Seems like there should be something like a "addf hm2_7i84.read" in the hal file?
Should the [HMOT] section of the ini file list the 7i84?

To see the 7I84 pins you need

1. 7I93 with the 7i93_svss4_8d.bit firmware loaded
2. 7I93 P1 connected to 7I44 and jumpered to supply 5V power to 7I44
3. 1 or 2 7I84s connected to the 7I44 with CAT5 cables to channels 0,1
4. 8 to 32V field power applied to 7I84(s)
(you should see a RED LED on the 7I84s if LinuxCNC is not running)
5. LinuxCNC running

Nothing is needed in the hal file to support the 7I84 except that the
sserial channels can be disabled with the incorrect sserial_port_0=nnnnnn
command line token. If you want to enable all 8 channels on the 7I44
the token should be "sserial_port_0=00000000"

On the 7i84 I have all the conditions you listed and - three LEDs two yellow and one red
I have the red light with or without linuxcnc running.

The docs say that sserial_port_0= is optional and defaults to all zeros.. There is not a sserial in the generated configs.

Is there a command to ping the 7i44?

The metal around the RS422 connectors is warm - not hot - but warmer than I would expect.

I switched it to use the aux power and measured 1.17A -- seems high to me?

That is way too high a 5V power current...

The 7I44 uses CMOS RS-422 interface chips so without the 7I84s
plugged in, should only draw 100 mA or so from the flat cable terminations

The 7I84s should only draw about 30 ma 5V power each from the Cat5 cables

Finally back on this - I have red LEDs on the 7i84s

Linuxcnc IS running from the command line - don't see any error lines

$ halcmd show all |grep 7i

shows no 7i84 - only 7i93 lines

I have 7i93_svss4_8d.bit in the 7i93 - connected via 7i44 to the 7i84s

If I grep
$ grep 7i ~/linuxcnc/configs/wells/*
I see reference to the 7i93 in wells.hal -- don't see any other card names.

This config was auto-generated via Pncconf - there are sanity checks for other daughter boards, but not for the 7i44. The PWM requirement for the 7i29 conflicts with boards I think are similar to the 7i44.

running version 2.8

Do you have a yellow com power LED on the 7I84 (near the 7I84s RJ45)?

yes - also

$ halcmd show all

Has lines with 7i93 - no 7i84 or 7i29

,.,
I attached everything that I think might help

The 7I29 would not be expected to show up (since it is s "dumb" PWM+encoder device)

Do you have the 7I29 on P2 and 7I44 on P1?
