I stand corrected. Its there in black and white. Must have just overlooked it.
Thanks for pointing that out PCW.

Do the servos on X and Y also have encoders or a do they use a tach signal?

glass scales for X and y
rotary encoder for Z
limit switches for X,Y and Z
Am I missing anything here???

Rick,
I believe that the servos do have tachs (but no encoders). They are connected to the servo dynamics drive cards and we're connected back to the Anilam control. THis is something I'll verify today.
Does EMC need the tach signals directly?
Cheers,
Michael

No, but the drives do (to run in velocity mode)

I may have taken a step backwards in my retrofit...
The original machine that I installed EMC on had really bad results when I ran the latency test. At times I'd get over 100,000ns for the base thread. So I installed EMC on another machine with better results for the base thread of less than 11,000ns.
But when I start EMC I get a bunch of "popup" errors. dmesg shows the following:
[ 37.226425] hm2_5i25.0: initialized AnyIO board at 0000:03:01.0
[ 37.236774] hm2/hm2_5i25.0: Smart Serial Error: port 0 channel 1. You may see this error if the FPGA card read thread is not running. This error message will not repeat.
[ 37.237772] hm2/hm2_5i25.0: Smart Serial Error: port 0 channel 3. You may see this error if the FPGA card read thread is not running. This error message will not repeat.
[ 37.238766] hm2/hm2_5i25.0: Smart Serial Error: port 0 channel 5. You may see this error if the FPGA card read thread is not running. This error message will not repeat.
[ 37.239766] hm2/hm2_5i25.0: Smart Serial Error: port 0 channel 7. You may see this error if the FPGA card read thread is not running. This error message will not repeat.
[ 37.259763] hm2/hm2_5i25.0: Smart Serial Comms Error: There have been more than 1 errors in 10 thread executions at least 200 times. See other error messages for details.
[ 37.259768] hm2/hm2_5i25.0: ***Smart Serial Port 0 will be stopped***
I'm assuming that this is bad (since I didn't get this on my other machine).
I'm running emc2 2.5.0-pre2-626-g402b6cd (this was the most recent from buildbot as of today march 2) with an 5i25 and one 7i77.
Is this something that I'm doing wrong? Or is it an issue with this latest emc2?

This looks like a sserial startup botch of some kind
(the channels 1,3,5,7 failed indicates a 0xAA in the data register which should only be there after a stop)
I would almost guess a LinuxCNC version issue, can you try 2.5 from the buildbot?

Do you have the field power connected and on? Without field power the daughter board will not be found by the 5i25. I've watched that same stack of errors pop up when I turned off field power to my 7i76...
I should get to my BP this weekend and connect up the 5i25/7i77... well it is plugged in so far.

No, that should be OK,
can you copy/paste the linuxcnc part of the dmesg here and your config line from the ini file

John,
Yup, field power is on and the field power LED is lit.
Also shut the machine down and reseated the 5i25 as well as both sides of the 25pin cable, no joy.
I do have the hard disk from the other machine that had my original EMC installation. I'll try booting with that and see if it gets the same error.
Cheers,
Michael
