OK, this is getting interesting...

Booted up with the old drive on the new machine and EMC starts with no complaints. Its possible that somehow my hal and ini files got corrupted.

I'll tar them up again and move them to the new drive and see if that fixes things.

Thanks for the help!

FYI
After version 2.5 build 626, you may need to install LinuxCNC (the new name!). it will remove EMC2.

The current build, as of 9:00pst was 904

Hope this helps

(PCW sighs a sigh of relief that its not a PCI core issue...)

False alarm. This must have been a newie user issue. I used the ini and hal from my old drive and now emc is happy when it starts, yeah!

Ray, regarding the version after 2.5 release 626... I thought I was getting the latest from the buildbot, According to buildbot.linuxcnc.org/ I should be using the following source:
deb buildbot.linuxcnc.org/ lucid v2.5_branch-rt

Should I be getting the latet from the development branch, "deb buildbot.linuxcnc.org/ lucid master-rt"??

I discovered this by accident a few days ago when looking into something else. This is because of the name change from EMC2 to LinuxCNC, that updates for Emc2 have ended, and is is now known as LinuxCNC. (wordy).

I used Synaptic package manager, searched for LinuxCNC, and installed it.

It looks to me as Feb 29 was the end of new builds for EMC2.

Check out: buildbot.linuxcnc.org/dists/

Ray,

Thanks for the tip. I did install linuxcnc and was pleased to find that the synaptic package manager realized that linuxcnc is an update to emc and deleted emc prior to installing linuxcnc.

Cheers,
Michael

John, I'm looking forward to you doing the 5i25/7i77 upgrade on your BP. Theres all kinds of stuff about linuxcnc that I don't understand and I'm hoping to leverage what you do.

Making slow progress. I've got my scales (x and y) and encoder (Z) wired up but need still need to configure their step vales and correct direction (the LinuxCNC's DRO screen shows all three axis going negative when I move them in the positive direction.

I've disconnected the old control completely from the electronics that will stay in the machine but I haven't yet removed the control from the system. One thing I've noticed is an odd ticking sound, almost like high power arcing to ground and it happens about once a second. I've never heard this sound before since my old control's cooling fans were so loud. The sound is coming from the automatic oiler.

I'm assuming this is normal. Is this normal or abe-normal?
