@JT, ah I see, the forum and the website are on an "own" server not with a hosting company.
My website is at Strato.de, they offer me a ready-made, up-to-date server on which I can install my website (Joomla).
So it's not just about the website and the forum, but about the complete server itself.

Where is this server located? In a company? University, at someone's home?

I can just see how big it is. ...

@ Aciera. Yes, I have read that. Thank you.

The forum is on Digital Ocean.

And here is another problem, I've never found the database or any attachments in the Kunena interface. I have a few web sites and the database is only in the hosting interface.

The DB will be hosted in a MySQL database and there will be a configuration file on the root folder that also contains the credentials for the SQL user Joomla uses.
The DB is usually managed directly if necessary by logging into phMyAdmin.

It sounds like the images and attachnents are stored in the database. SQL has a data type called a BLOB, a Binary Large Object which is designed for this type of thing.

Hi everyone,Apologies for not getting back to you sooner. If I understand the current situation correctly, here’s how things stand:
  • We have access to fairly large web storage, but we currently lack the permissions needed to perform repairs or set up a new installation.
  • The current operator continues to finance the website, the storage, and the domain.
  • There’s no possibility at the moment to request root access, which would allow repairs or a new installation.
  • The domain linuxcnc.org is owned by several people who also finance it.
The main issue, therefore, seems to be the lack of root access to maintain or reinstall the system.I have an idea on how we might proceed:
If I were able to find an investor or sponsor who could provide sufficient web space, we could rebuild the forum and website, then link the existing URL to the new space. For this, it would be helpful to know how much storage we currently use and since when, to estimate the long-term requirements.Would such a proposal be of interest to the community?
Just to clarify: I don’t currently have a sponsor, but I’d be happy to look into it if there’s interest.Best regards,
Mücke

It would be very nice to have new forum software.
Members like Joco have ip ban. This is a very bad situation.

How faster how better.

Maybe JT can give volunteers the
information to at least setup a new software platform and do migration work.

Now we are all using this outdated nasty
text editor.

I like the fact there’s no adds.

It would nice to see a link of method to donate a few coins. If I’ve missed it if someone has a link it would be appreciated.

Whilst the editor is a pain, switching to “source view” can make life easier for edits.

I agree with you!

Du hast Recht, das habe ich auch noch nicht gesehen, aber das ändert nichts an der Grundproblematik.

Whilst the editor is a pain, switching to “source view” can make life easier for edits.

It's not just the editor.
The site and I believe the forum are no longer included in the updates (security update).
Many functions have been deactivated or are not working properly.

Hence the desire to update something here.
(I am ignorant though)
- User structure, who edits what.
- Who can put new versions of LinuxCNC online?
- Who edits the wiki?
- Forum administrators, ....
- ... etc.

There are so many different places in the background that I don't know, as I'm just a normal user, so I can't estimate all the consequences, hence my suggestion.

Disclaimer:
The below are all my own opinions and 99.99% of the time aren't worth the time spent reading. Also the fact I use a modified version of English, Australian, and was more interested in watching clouds at school or seeing how long it took to get chucked out of the class, record was walking in the door, not saying a word and being asked to leave, may also make the below difficult to make sense of.

Whether you believe something to be this way or that way doesn't make it so. The only way to find out for sure is to ask, sometimes those that hold that info may not want to share.

User structure, who edits what.
Hmm not too sure about that or what you mean.

Who can put new versions of LinuxCNC online?
I'd be guessing the core dev team, I generally just build from source and make my own deb packages. Actually when I was sharing my Mint iso I was also putting up new packages, the Debian pacakges weren't an easy install on Mint at the time, on a server I paid for myself (along with the domain name). I got the hump with people expecting weekly updates, the depression started hitting me hard so I said, fuck em.

Who edits the wiki?
wiki.linuxcnc.org/cgi-bin/wiki.pl?BasicSteps
I haven't felt the need to, plus I'm not good at explaining stuff. I doubt many are aware that it exists. I doubt many realise Linuxcnc has a home page or any other pages apart from the forum. There's a lot of historical info there on the wiki. In reality it comes down to users adding to the wiki, if no one wants to add anything it may stay, shall we say stale. In saying that it does make for an interesting read. Tho we seem to be in a culture where everything needs to be up the minute relevant.

Forum admins ?
I guess the guys that are the most knowledgable, have the best input (and don't lose their rag or spit the dummy..you know stable sort of chaps) and are chosen, via whatever method, by the other admins. Not something that I feel a regular user should be concerned about.

If you really are concerned about the direction of things it may be of use to join the mailing list and start asking questions there.

To tell the truth I've never had any security issues come from using the forum. I can't remember it being down to some "script kiddie" or other nefarious player. Sure from time to time the spammers turn up. Tommy & co usually jump on it quick. There also the chance to be active if this respect and report it.

Here in lies a problem because I don't have access to the server for the forum so I can't ask them up change the PHP.

Edit: I can ssh into the forum as root and upgrade the OS and I do that when I think about it.

JT

If you can SSH in as root to upgrade the OS you should also have root access to the server.
Its so long since I played with Joomla but configuration.php in the website's root folder contains the Database name, user name and password which is all you really need to upgrade the instance.
Ref: www.joomlashack.com/blog/joomla/guided-t...nfigurationphp-file/

Whilst a Cpanel interface is nice for users, its not really necessary to host a web server (usually whats called a a LAMP stack) and Joomla. I managed my webserver for years without a cpanel

From memory, usually a new user is defined for the web site and there should be a WWW folder in that user's home folder. As root you could see this.

Just focus on the forum would be my advice.
