Boot Problem

Boot Problem was created by Robert Dunn
I setup my Sherline computer a few days ago, and everything seemed to work well at first.
Now when I boot the screen flashes repeatedly with the following message: "(process: 326) : Glib-WARNING-**:getpwdid-r( ), failed due to unknown user".
I have discovered if I then press CTRL-ALT-DELETE and then repeatedly press ESC while it is rebooting, it will reboot. I have run all the disc read tests, and they are normal.
Any ideas?

Thanks,

Bob

It is a bug with Ubuntu 10 and various similar vintage distros.

There may be a solution in that lot which you are happy with, I don't think I will try coaching how to remake initrd images, which appears to be near the root of the problem on some systems.

This suggests the problem can be triggered by the splash screen and solved by removing it.
Got to be worth trying

I'm using Sherline's modified Ubuntu 6.0. The errors others report are related to installing, mine are related to booting. Possibly the same fault, though. Would reinstalling work, do you think?
Thanks for your comments.

I'm using Sherline's modified Ubuntu 6.0

Why? It is ancient and completely unsupported.
If you bought that from Sherline, take it back and demand a proper system

Otherwise I would just install a new distro with Linuxcnc and set up whatever you have the same as you would any other machine.
There are sample Sherline configs included.

The errors others report are related to installing, mine are related to booting.

Not so, there are plenty on booting. Depends how many of the links you read

Yes, I have read several more, and others report boot problems, as well.
I'll check with Sherline in the morning.
Thanks for your help.

My mistake. It's Ubuntu 10.04 LTS, lucid Lynx. Still, it was only supported until 2013.

You won't get anything newer from Sherline.

Try the splash removal from the boot line first, but there is nothing to stop you saving all your configs and installing the Debian based distro and running them from that

I have found the appropriate files with the splash information in them, but I don't have authorities to modify them. Can you tell me how to grant myself rights to make changes to those files?
Thanks again for your help with this.

From a terminal you can type sudo gedit (or your text editor of choise). Then you can open the file from there with super user privileges.

The splash change fixed the boot problem. The File I changed was different than that in the link above. I changed "quiet splash" to "nosplash" in var/lib/ucf/cache/:etc:default:grub. A note in this file says to run update-grub after to update grub.cfg. I did this, but it didn't update that file (creation date didn't change).
The problem is solved, but I don't like loose ends--can you suggest why the change works without grub.cfg being changed?
Many thanks to you both,
Bob

I spoke too soon. I booted 20 times today OK, but just now it failed.
