Hello
I have the same kind of question.
I want to add home sensor NPN on a mesa card (the 7i96)
I was wondering if this kind of wirring will fit ? (Cf picture included)
If yes what do you recommand to add the control to linuxcnc ?
restart the conf with the GUI (but I had to select the 7i76 card and to change by hand after the name inside the hal file...)
Or just add some lines in the hal file ?
Thanks

If you connect 24V to input common then you are configured for sourcing inputs and you don't need the resistor. A NPN prox functions as a switch-to-ground and that is what is needed to drive the inputs in the configuration that you have illustrated.

To further clarify, if you were to connect the ground to the common instead to configure the input as a sinking input. That is when you would need to use a pull up resistor like you have in your drawing.

If you use the development branch of Linuxcnc. It has support for using the 7i96 (the right drivers...).

Thanks for reply
So I will do the wirring without the resistor.
For the driver did you recommand to use the developpement branch of linuxCnc ?
Is it enough stable, I am not an expert
If not is there another way to configure the homming ?

It is generally quite stable and usable. You just have to remember, new features may not be fully documented and new updates always run the risk of introducing an unexpected bug. A lot of people have been using it for running real machinery for years, and I have been given the impression that there may be a new release in the near future (less than a year)
Personally, I don't have any production machines currently running Master. But that is because I don't have any that require the new features there. I have used it on production machines in the past though when there was something I needed in it Until the features I needed were added to the stable release, then I switched.
If there was something I needed or wanted to use in Master, I would not hesitate to use it again though.

When you say the development branch you mean any 2.8 version or a specific one ?
Because I had forgottent but I am currently with the 2.8.0-pre1-3900-g3b733e8b9

I'm not sure exactly when support for the 7i96 was added to Master (2.8-pre) but it was fairly recently. I'd suggest updating to the latest version (4081...)
