So I seem to be having trouble using the editor this morning. Let's try this one more time. (I wish I knew of a way to edit or delete my postings on this forum. I hate leaving a permanent record of my incompetence for all to see.)

Please find the log file attached below.

Please see attached file. File contains contents of window that opens after launch fails. (Sorry I didn't include this earlier -- I am completely new to Linux and it took me a while to figure out how to save it to a file.)

failed to set register P0x0101 to 0x0064 (100): Connection timed out
mitsub_vfd.hal:12: waitpid failed gs2_vfd spindle-vfd
mitsub_vfd.hal:12: gs2_vfd exited without becoming ready

Is the problem.

It would be interesting to comment-out "HALFILE = mitsub_vfd,hal" in the INI file [HAL] section and see if you still get the same freeze.

I am also a bit suspicious that the HAL file is "mitsub_vfd" and the driver being used is "gs2_vfd". You may want mitsub_vfd

Just went through a little "voyage of discovery" here. It turns out there are no references to "mitsub_vfd" anywhere in the my_LinuxCNC_machine.hal file. I did find a file called mitsub_vfd.hal in the directory with the other .hal files. Eventually I found a reference that file in postgui_call_list.hal. So I commented out that reference.

Now when I launch my configuration it takes even longer (something like 4 minutes) but eventually the actual operating window comes up--no error window this time. I note that if I try to enlarge the window, the computer locks up for good.

Here is a status update:
--The error window that was coming up after I launched LinuxCNC using my configuration went away after I commented out the reference to "mitsub_vfd.hal" in "postgui_call_list.hal". Thanks to andypugh for his help with this problem.

--LinuxCNC now comes up and seems to run normally with my configuration and also with any of the sample configurations I have tried.

--There is still a long delay (at least 60 seconds) after launching LinuxCNC during which the cursor moves but it is not possible to select anything with it. I also note that stretching the operating window locks up the system.

--I ran LinuxCNC with my configuration from the terminal, played with it a bit, and shut it down. Here is what showed up in the terminal window:

I've seen that kind of behaviour when something is wrong with OpenGL on the host
If even the sim configs hang like this its most likely a problem with the PC/Graphics

Is there a chance a different video card would fix the problem?

New status update:
I am now running LinuxCNC on a different computer. All previously reported problems are resolved.

So now I can start down the path of configuration.

Final status update:
Regarding the Asus P4P800-E Deluxe motherboard that was freezing for about a minute after I launched LinuxCNC:
I swapped out the nVidia 6800 GT (G-Force 6 Series) video card for an ATI Radeon 9600 and now LinuxCNC launches normally and there seem to be no problems. I also noted that the latency jitter numbers are somewhat less now.

So, as far as I am concerned, this topic is closed.

Thanks to everyone who pitched in to help me resolve this.

FWIW, I am planning now to use this motherboard as an upgrade to a Bridgeport BOSS conversion that I did years ago using MAXNC. Since MAXNC uses the parallel port, I am hoping that the changeover will be straight forward. (At least I should have to re-wire anything.) :)
