Relay to turn on spindle

What type of relay would be used to turn on the spindle?

My grizzly g0463/siegx3 has a 110v dc motor(with brushes) it has forward and reverse drum switch and a potentiometer for speed.

I am finding topixs for the sx3 which uses a brushless motor.
The breakout board has a built in spindle relay but I'm not sure where to start with it.

What are you using for a BOB? You need to know how much current and at what voltage the output can handle.
I have a Sieg X3 with a Mesa 7i76 and am using 24v for my field power so the relay I used may not work for you.

I used these Relays in my new cabinet and I really like them.

It's a $20 5 ax sainsmart. I'll have to look up the specs, but it's a cheap card.

you shoudt use a 2 relay setup
5V FTR relay that drives a 8A 12V or 24V relay block like Finder 40,52 or 61

you can use the Realys from the Arduino 5V

the BOB got a single relay on board if you havent used it then use it as the FTR to get the bigger relay to work

The relay on the Bob I have(currently unused) closes when the spindle button is pressed. I'm having trouble finding a relay that can switch 110volt DC at 8amps. Most seem to be an 120/dc35 volts.

I checked the voltage at the switch. It's actually ac 120volts because it's before it reaches the speed control. So I can use an ac relay.

I was wrong

The forward reverse switch sees varying DC voltage up to 100volt. That's too much DC current for the relay in my board so it won't work. Switching just on the power cord wont work either because there is a safety fault switch

I could still be wrong.

The voltage varies at the switch but on DC I'm getting negative volts while the motor is running.

I think I'm over thinking this.if I put the relay on the black wire going to the motor it will work. I would just have to make sure the relay could handle the load. Which I think it will be too much.

Or I have to bypass the safety some how and switch the AC side

best to go to your local E-part dealer or simply to a TV-repair shop or a Electronic man that makes house installations they got relays in spare for Free

I'm not familiar with your motor drive but in general you don't ever want to put a switch between the drive and the motor. You can blow the drive. Let the drive do the switching and speed control etc. If your drive doesn't have external inputs you would have to hack it or simply switch the ac supply assuming this is a small motor variable speed unit non VFD.

I would simply make a small relay box that has 2 outlets. Use 2 relays. Plug in the drive in one and have the other outlet control something like a small coolant pump etc.

I probably would not bypass the safety and just switch it on manually after issuing a M3. I think its more beneficial if the spindle stops automatically.

Just get a couple of solid state relays or mechanical ice cube/din rail ones rated above the inrush current of the drive.
