a little digging and it seems it DOES use a usb ethernet chip. sigh. oh well. also seems the bios isn't Linux very friendly. so not worth the effort.

What is inside the PocketNC? (I suspect it's a Beaglebone)

www.mouser.ca/datasheet/2/826/UP-CHT01%2...2nd%20Ed-1100434.pdf
price isnt too horrible at 235cdn. still need the screen/panel but, the board can be stuffed right next to the mesa card.

so the Up is aaeon which is asus… which led me to all their actual industrial hmi's… which are kinda expensive, but not horrible since you don't need to add much in terms of mounting and they run of the main 24v psu and are temperature and shock rated.

this ones not in their retail store, but it looks like the ideal one. should come in under $600 + $40 for an msata drive in the volume I want. dual LAN, dual rs485, usb etc. comes in j1900. wifi is an option (just a card with antenna you can just buy yourself)

so... what would make this fail to work?

PCI networking and built-in RS485 ports looks very promising.
It is specifically claimed to support Linux.

I'd go with the N3350 version as I think its an upgrade to the J1900 which generally works. One of my Brix is a N3360 and it works
Latency might be high but quite OK for a Mesa ethernet card...

might be required to g with the n3350 as the j1900 seems to be EOL end of the year. shame because it was slimmer.
you can also buy the pc separate for $310/single sample. wont strictly end up less money here than the all in one, but it give me some options to machine a front bezel with holes for e stop and on/off and some leds and an maybe an IPS screen with higher quality.
that box also has all the rs485's but as 9 pins instead of rj45.
