I think I have to give up haha. I need a mini cabinet. just not enough places to stuff things in this machine (mostly the spindle drive).
so put the screen on the cabinet and some buttons and pico itx board (also aaeon), mesa 7i96, spindle drive, delta 24v psu, and the other remaining bits. then just one conduit to the back of the machine carrying all the cables.

So if you go that way, is an ethernet 7i96 the way to go? You might be better with a PCI/PCIe mesa card combo. To me the advantage of the ethernet cards is you can move the PC away from the machine and only have it connected with an ethernet cable. If its all in the one cabinet, there's no point and your unit costs might come down.

no pci slot on the board and 7i96 is less than half the cost of the 5i25+7i76
so theres still a big advantage to the ethernet, even though its not remote.
the machined mini cabinet, screen, mobo, mesa and buttons should still run under $600ish usd, which is pretty good for a complete control by any standard plus I get a "free" box to fit my psu and spindle drive main breaker switch and bits inside.

stupid question, does linuxcnc use any more than 2gb ram? im so used to stuffing windows 64 bit machines with crazy amounts of ram (256gb is the norm at work) that ive forgotton that 32 bit stuff is usually restricted to 2gb.
reason is that the pci board comes with 2 or 4 gb… no point spending money for 4gb is it doesn't use it.

From memory I think thats OK. I seem to remember when I bought my PC 2gb was the recommendation but when I went to buy, I had to buy a 4gb memory chip as thats all they had...

The docs for 2.7 and master (2.8) say 1 gb is all you need

ok thanks, that saves a few bucks.
i drew up a little 8x6x10" tall cabinet. 7" touch screen on the top. seemed more usable than on the side.
