I am going back to a project that has been shelved for some time. This is a retrofit of an ENCO compact5.

I have tried to start linuxCNC but get an error minilathe.hal:93:param or pin 'hm2.5i25.0.7i77.0.0.analogout0.scalemax'

I realize this may be the first of many errors in my code.

any help would be apreciated.

That error can be cause by a couple of things:

1. Wrong firmware in 5I25
(should be 5i25_7i77x2.bit)

2. 5V power issues on 7I77
If the 7I77 5V is powered by the 5I25, cable power jumpers must be:
5I25 W2 UP 7I77 W5 LEFT 7I77 TB1 unconnected.

If the 7I77 5V is supplied externally, the jumpers must be:
5I25 W2 DOWN 7I77 W5 RIGHT 7I77 TB1 connected to external 5V supply

3. Cable between 5I25 and 7I77 wrong or faulty or disconnected

I checked what was suggested but did not find the problem there. I created a test configuration to see if axis would load and it did.

Is there anything in the hal file that could cause this error?

There are a couple things the hal file that could cause this error
(wrong sserial mode set for example) but power/cabling/firmware
problems are much more likely.
Can you post the result of

sudo mesaflash --device 5i25 --readhmid

and your hal/ini files?

Umm the mesaflash output is not correct, which mesaflash version are you using?

I suggest the latest, here:

OK that's the correct firmwareand I don't see anything obvious wrong with the
hal or ini files. Do you have both Yellow LEDs on the top edge of the 7I77 illuminated?
Have you checked the 5V at the 7I77 with a meter (on TB1)?

Are the 2 yellow light on near the board center?
Are both setup mode jumpers (W4 and W12) in the left hand position?
