You can either use a voltmeter or a LED with a resistor to test an output.

The positive of the voltmeter or LED to the output you want to test and the negative to the ground pin of the parallel port. You will need to use google to find a picture of a parallel port showing the signals. Ground is pins 18 - 25.

So I unplug the b.o.b. and test the parallel port pin with volt meter?
I must say when I start my machine all the steppers lock up

I am a bit surprised that the parallel port shows up in /proc/ioports if, in fact, it is connected via M2 and PCIe.

Have you tried using the parallel port tester component?

And I found the parallel port tester I need to read more to understand it better.
I have to work during the week , I will try the tester when i get to the shop.
Is there a list of B.O.B.'s known to work
E-stop is working!

Any BOB designed to work with a parallel port will work.
The only real difference is the quality of user guides.

I'm just lost... watched a ton of video's still can't figure out
---really good program tough----

This is a little parallel port tester done with pyVCP.

The files

upload:ptest.xml

upload:ptest.hal

To run this place both files in the same directory and open a terminal window and use the command

halrun -I -f ptest.hal

upload:ptest-final.png

You can push the output buttons and change the state of each output. When you toggle an input it shows up on the screen.

Enjoy BJT

Parallel port tester is included with LinuxCNC as has been pointed out several times on this OR another 2 topics with the same issues regarding parallel ports, it can be found in the menu >CNC>LinuxCNC> this opens "configuration selector", click on left >sample configs>apps>parport>parport_0x378 <<<<for the onboard/built in port.
Also on the right hand side there are infos on how to check for ports and how to find their addresses.
