linux CNC on Mac hardware? was created by PaulQUE
Hello everyone, I am currently doing a retrofit project, and the time to choose a computer has come. I have a couple 2009 IMACs (core 2 duo) lying around, and I know it is quite easy to install linux on old mac, I plan to use a mesa 7i96 board on the machine it self. My question is, can I install linux cnc on this machine if it runs on debian? will it run? How much harder would it be then on a cheapo dell optiplex? thanks

You'd have to test the latency. If the BIOS lets you kill power management, what IO do you have, e.g. PCIe, Ethernet?
Cheapo Dells have been used many times before. You just need to see the latency results and if it has slots for LPT, Mesa (PCI/e) or Ethernet for IO.

If Debian or Mint work on it, yes you can install LinuxCNC on it.
The more important question is how is the real time stuff going to work on it regarding latency, but that should also work.

If that looks good, then it becomes a little more difficult to test without the actual hardware, but if you are going to use the 7i96 regardless then that would be the next experiment.

If you already have the hardware, then just try a live-disc boot with the LinuxCNC 2.8.2 ISO and see what the latency test gives you.Hello everyone, I am currently doing a retrofit project, and the time to choose a computer has come. EDIT - Can't use USB port in the keyboard !!
I have an old iMac and can't get it to load from a live-disk boot.
Doing my head in and keeps coming up with a fatal error.

Does the standard installer work? (ie, rather than the LinuxCNC one)
If it does, then you can start there instead.

All worked for me with MX Linux using snowgoer540 instructions found here -> forum.linuxcnc.org/9-installing-linuxcnc...indows-users?start=0
I did have to use the usb in the screen and some alternative programs that work on a Mac.
