I am getting more involved in our local makerspace and I have a few machines that I need help with

both have not had updates in years, and one had the OS updates sunset last year

specs on both machines are not very high, I think one has an atom processor

so I have three goals in mind
  • identify the CNC interfaces, OS, and other hardware so we can get some documentation
  • fix/update the OS'es so the machines can be run(and document)
  • develop process documents and a tutorial plan so new members to the makerspace can learn to use the machines, with simple milestones from manual operation to full use of abilities

one is a Grizzly G8689 Mini Milling machine
the other I still need to fully identify, but I think it is a Sieg KC4S

I just scanned/found links of the documentation for the Grizzly, but there is no info about the CNC addon other than it is a dual core PC running linuxCNC

also I am not a linux expert
and I havent played with a mill in 30 years
I could almost say the same about lathes, except that I have been playing with our EMCO super 11 CD manual lathe

once we get these two up and running I have to tackle the leadwell 550D that also has been collecting dust

The big mill is begging to be retrofitted with LinuxCNC ! :)
The best thing about LinuxCNC is that it can be used for all 3 machines, and for a makerspace that is hugely important.

the big one should be a complete unit, so no need to retrofit linuxcnc unless there is a dang good reason

and I think parts of it are very proprietary, and the new owners of it's IP are very anti right to repair

so it'll be left alone, until it's priority is increased

Oh good, they are using LinuxCNC already, one is on Debian wheezy and the other on Ubuntu 10.04.

you missed the bit about the ubuntu 10.04 is no longer supported for over half a decade

and the wheezy gets 404 errors when you try to update

both of which are things we want to fix in steps 1 and 2 (among other things)

bonus note, looks like the grizzly is using a parallel interface, which will be hard to upgrade without replacing the controller, once we can find out WHICH CONTROLER IT IS

I did not miss that, i just do not care, it works and i still have it in use on some machines, it just never fails.
Same for Wheezy, if it works, why change ?
Also no need to change the parallel port, it works!
In case you go the changing route, there are parallel port addon cards, there are Mesa boards for PCI, PCI-E and ETH, all can do 2 parallel ports, but at much, much higher speeds, and can do other stuff also, like hardware PWM, encoder counting, etc.
