Definitely do not get this one: www.amazon.com/dp/B07QY8LDGX There are other NUCs which install LinuxCNC better.

The Mesa ethernet cards have to connected to a on board ethernet port or a PCI\PCIe ethernet card. USB ethernet dongles are not the ones to be used, due to USB not having a realtime implementation.
I have a M4A785D-M_PRO motherboard with an old X2 Athlon II @ 3.0GHz (from memory it will support Phenom II / Athlon II / Phenom / Athlon) with 4GB ram combined with a AMD GPU will give very very good latency when booted with isolcpus=1, haven't a Quad core CPU to test with. Yep it's about 13 yro but still works well. This is with the recent Buster iso with a RT-PREEMPT kernel, not a RTAI kernel.

Thanks, so you prefer one without a parallel port, do you then buy a pcie parallel adapter to put in the cabinet, or do you solely rely on the mesa cards to run out of usb/ethernet?

Yes i do prefer without parallel port whenever i can manage to get the Mesa boards, otherwise i still use parallel ports on a lot of machines and i still have some add on parallel port cards. Thanks, so you prefer one without a parallel port, do you then buy a pcie parallel adapter to put in the cabinet, or do you solely rely on the mesa cards to run out of usb/ethernet?

Thank you all!
I just have more more question: since it's not so easy here to find these old desktops, what would be the prefered new itx-motherboard, barebone, nuc, off the shelf small form factor PC or desktop PC of 2021?

The only ITX i have is the daily driver on my desk, it has very good latency, but it also has a eye watering price tag.
From experience, new boards are a cr@p shoot, had a better/higher priced board that was terrible for latency, this one is perfect, my bro had a cheaper one that was also very good as far as latency it concerned.
All AMD, B550 and X570.
I still have a stinking suspicion it also has to do with processors but could not verify, this is what i got from short tests:
bad latency = Ryzen 5 3500X
good latency, Ryzen 5 3600, Ryzen 7 3700X, Ryzen 9 3900X
The suspicious part? 3500X has no hyperthreading, all the others do, and on Intel systems the first thing to turn off is hyperthreading!
