oh well so long beaglebrains special.

Its even easier on Debian. Just install debian Bookworm aka testing
and  open synaptic and search for linuxcnc and install linuxcnc-uspace and linuxcnc-uspace-dev
This will bring in the PREEMPT_RT kernel.

I must be out of practice running a new iso. with a current linux distro already on the main drive . I tried running Debian 11 (wouldn't load)
I tried Debian 11 non free. Same problem. I tried running my usual beaglebrains special (again same issue) . Before you ask yes I made sure
the boot order favored  my usb dvd drive first it is the Dell 9020 micro after all. And also yes I tried different USb ports to see if that was the problem. I wonder if the new installs favor UEFI over BIOS now . But that shouldn't have prevented the Special from loading. I may have to search for how to blank the boot drive and see if that fixes it. I am kind of at a loss.

Use Rufus to write the image to USB.
Or if you are on Mint, start>preferences>disks
there choose the USB on the left side, then click on the "3 vertical dots" on the upper right side and choose restore disk image.

update it looks like my portable/external DVD drive has failed. Of course it has.

Also on Debian 11, I just let it run UEFI or not! Maybe it does favour UEFI

Maybe. However for me it has proven to be my portable external DVD drive was the culprit. I received the replacement this morning.
The install on one of my test computers is going as I type this.
