Ok thanks for that, I see things clearly now.

What in the way of drivers did you attempt to install. And did you reboot after installing ?

And can you run
sudo lspci
as most recent kernels "should" support PCI parallel ports.

Haha you did it already

I couldn't FIND the drivers. So I couldn't install them.

The PCI card just started working out of the blue. Now it's not...

lscpi -vnn

Will supply a bit more info.

I've had a look around and I can't seem to find a driver that matches the device ID of the Parallel Port. Linux matches drivers on the ID of a device.

There is the option of forcing a driver to load for the parallel port, we can give that option a go if you want.

I have a couple PCI parallel port cards that should work. If you're some where Down Under I could throw one your way after a little more testing.

As to why it worked then didn't I have no idea.
Maybe the case was moved around a bit when you tripped on the cable.
You could shutdown, remove the card, reboot, shutdown again and re insert the card and see what happens.

I've tried shutting down, removing, rebooting, shutting down, reinserting, rebooting.

Same error.

I'm in Queensland.

There is no driver compiled with that PCI ID, so dmesg will show no info regarding parallel port. And the addresses of the card show as "disabled".

Even searching online for a the PCI ID, brings up nothing useful.
As seen below using the vendor ID (1710) brings up no matches for anything matching a paralell port.
