Is probably an easier way to get the code.
I like to make a seperate folder
mkdir devel
cd devel
and place all my cloned repos in there. It keeps things tidy...

git clone https://github.com/LinuxCNC/linuxcnc.git linuxcnc-dev
git checkout 2.8I like to make a seperate folder
