I think the best way is to leave the pid control on servo drivers . You can connect the feedback from the driver to the linuxCNC without pid connectivity. That is, if the device makes a bigger error - linuxcnc will stop the machine. My lathe will work this way.

Best way in regards to what?

- Ease of installation?
- machine dynamics?
- achievable following error?

You have a high resolution encoder- 24 bit. With a well-adjusted pid regulator you have a good response - a small error. I think if you do like me.. linuxcnc will stop the machine in case of any problem with missing steps or BIG programming error(crash).
I think so, maybe someone with experience can shed some light.

Also many users complain about feedback delay from the driver. (many different brands of servo drivers with absolute encoders 17bit - 24bit) .The device must convert the feedback signal from digital to incremental.
